Filipendula ulmaria

Description:

The plant is characterized by cream flowers in the summertime.

Properties:

Meadowsweet is antacid, astringent, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic.

Healing Properties:

The plant contains salicylates. These substances reduce fever and inflammation.

Ailment Treated:

Meadowsweet works well for acid stomach, heartburn, ulcers, indigestion, rheumatism and arthritis, and diarrhea. The herb is used to relieve cold and flu symptoms such as fever and pain. It is also used to relieve inflammation and to reduce body weight.

Side Effects:

Large doses may cause nausea.

Contraindications:

Salicylates have been related to Reye syndrome, an illness of the brain and liver.

Do NOT use if:

Do not use this herb if you are allergic to salicylates or aspirin. Do not give to children.

History:

The plant was a medieval strewing herb.

Damp meadows.
