Calendula officinalis

Description:

Marigold is composed of orange and yellow flowering heads that are four to seven centimeters (two to three inches) in diameter. The leaves are pale green and very narrow. Marigold grows to a height of about 70 cm (2 feet), is native to Mediterranean countries, and can be both an annual or biennial plant.

Properties:

Marigold is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and acts as a painkiller for minor injuries and irritations. The herb is antispasmodic, antifungal, antiseptic, and is used to lift one’s spirits.

Healing Properties:

The plant’s complex substances are anti-inflammatory and stimulate healing. It is an excellent first aid treatment.

Ailment Treated:

Marigold can be used externally to treat skin problems such as sores, rashes, and cuts. However, other benefits include aid against allergies, bowel diseases, mucous membrane and skin disorders, gastritis, and conjunctivitis. Marigold is effective against dry or cracked skin, eczema, varicose veins, and it helps regulate the menstrual cycle in women.

Side Effects:

External irritation and redness.

Contraindications:

Do not use marigold for more than two weeks or until symptoms subside. Wait six weeks before resuming use. Marigold can increase the sedative effect of medications and should not be consumed before operating machinery.

Do NOT use if:

Do not use on deep wounds or serious injuries.

History:

Marigold’s name refers to the Virgin Mary, and the flowers are traditionally used in Catholic celebrations. Its name also refers to the plant’s tendency to bear flowers once a month in warm climates. Marigold has historically been used to treat anything from toothaches to snakebites.
