Bronchitis << Page 4 of 11 >>

Description:
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the windpipe (trachea) and air passages (bronchi) of the respiratory tract. The condition can be acute or chronic, based on the cause and length of the inflammation. Bronchitis most often occurs in the winter.

Acute bronchitis is a short-term condition that is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection and can be connected to a cold or flu. Symptoms include painful coughing and irritation. If the mucus coughed out is colored (yellow, green, or brown), the problem may be bacterial. If the mucus is clear, a viral infection may be to blame. The condition usually lasts a couple of days although coughing can continue for several weeks.

Chronic bronchitis is a long-term infection found in smokers and people subjected to severe pollution. Usually, the chronic bronchitis results in coughing for at least three months as the body tries to fight a bacterial infection.

Bronchitis can also be triggered by allergic reactions to pollen, dust, or molds. The condition begins with a dry cough, fever, and runny nose. The coughing gets progressively worse and can lead to wheezing.
